Four Bequeathals of Pride (Proverbs)

The Bible tells us that pride is one thing that God hates (Prov. 6:16-17; 8:13). The Book of Proverbs tells us that when pride comes, it brings with it and leaves behind at least 4 things:

1. SHAME: "When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom." (Pro 11:2 NKJ)

2. STRIFE: "By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom." (Pro 13:10 NKJ)

3. DESTRUCTION: "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (Pro 16:18 NKJ)

4. DEBASEMENT: "A man's pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor." (Pro 29:23 NKJ)

SO WHAT TO DO?

"Then He [Jesus] said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels." (Luk 9:23-26 NKJ)

"But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge." (Jam 4:6-11 NKJ)

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Phi 2:3-11 NKJ)

"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
(Heb 12:1-2 NKJ)
